The fastest way to catalogue a shelf is to scan it. Volumes reads the ISBN barcode on the back of a book and fills in the title, author and cover for you, one book at a time or a whole shelf in a row.

How it works
One book, or the whole shelf
Switch between Scan Book and Scan Shelf on the camera itself. Scan a shelf's worth of barcodes, then review them together: mark them All Read or None Read, and Set Location for the lot. Interrupted? Finish Review picks up where you left off.
- Add by ISBN when a barcode is damaged or missing, or Search by Name.
- Change Edition to match the copy you actually own.
- Save a book by hand when it can't be found online.
Scan without unlocking
Quick Scan works from the Lock Screen, Control Center or the Camera Control button on iPhone. Scan the books in a shop or a friend's house, then decide later in Quick Scans whether each one goes in your library, as read, or on your wishlist.
Do I already own this?
With Visual Intelligence on iPhone, point the camera at a barcode or cover and choose Volumes. It tells you whether the book is on your shelves, on your wishlist or lent out, and lets you add it if not. Or ask Siri “Do I own this in Volumes”.
Fill in what's missing
No cover? Tap Add Cover and photograph your copy; Volumes straightens it for you. No description? Tap Add Description and photograph the back cover.

Good to know
What gets sent when I scan a barcode?
Only the ISBN, to a public book database, to fill in the book's details. The request carries no identifier for you or your device.
Do scanned books appear on my iPad and Mac?
Yes. Books you scan on your iPhone appear on your iPad and Mac automatically through your own iCloud. Quick Scan and Visual Intelligence are iPhone features.
